Why Treatment of Biosolids?
- Treatment of biosolids by composting or biodrying result in fast
drying of the material and ensures a safe hygienisation. - Valuable plant nutrients are not wasted and the compost created is
homogeneous and suitable for storage. The lower moisture content
and volume mean that the cost of transportation to the plant is
reduced considerably. - Compost made of sewage sludge is a stabilized organic fertilizer
with an average nutrient content. It can release the contained
nutrients evenly and has a positive influence on the humus balance.
Crops fertilized with compost are healthier than those fertilized
with chemical fertilizer. Furthermore, the use of chemical fertilizers pollutes the water beneath the soil. - Dried sewage sludge is a pourable substitute with a low to
medium fuel value. It is most commonly used in power plants and cement factories.
Why a BACKHUS Turner?
When composting sewage sludge, the BACKHUS turner ensures:
- fast drying
- safe hygienisation
- optimal rotting process
BACKHUS turners are known and valued all around the world.
BACKHUS stands for superior quality and cost-effectiveness.
Together with their customers, BACKHUS EcoEngineers develop concepts for facilities and machines to ensure the practical and sustainable treatment of waste.

Facts:
- To protect our drinking water from pollution by sewage, more and more municipalities build waste water treatment plants (WWTP).
- The main residue from the WWTP is sewage sludge (biosolids) which can be used as a fertilizer in agriculture or as a fuel in power plants.
- Direct application on farmland is only possible between crop seasons. Direct usage as a fuel is not efficient due to the high moisture content of the biosolids.
- The storage of biosolids requires a lot of space due to high moisture content and can create enviromental pollution if stored on non sealed surfaces.
